Looking back
Posted on 12 September 2022

The second year of the Circular Cotton Cascade project is well underway. In this news post, we look back at the first year of the project.

In the first six months, the partners started to get to know each other better. Ambitions and experiences were exchanged during several working sessions based on the four themes the project is investigating: (1) cascading, (2) supply chain management (data and logistics), (3) value and impact and (4) collaborative business models.

At the same time, the sowing of different varieties of regenerative cotton by the Indian partners of the project has also really started. Regeneration goes beyond sustainability, it is about actively restoring and nurturing, creating conditions in which ecosystems, economies and people can flourish. This cotton has a positive impact for people and the environment. Research is being done to determine which variety can be used for as long and as often as possible. This is an eventful process, as two of the three sowings have been strongly affected by a number of cyclones.

In the second half of the year, we focused on concretization. Partners went to work on mapping the landscape of all partners and discussed what impact is being pursued. Nature as a stakeholder was also explicitly put forward. By means of backcasting the ideal process was mapped per step of the cascade with the help of value mapping: Back from Root Tissue, to a towel roll, to a T-shirt, to an overall (workwear) and back to the start: the cotton.
Steps of the cascade.
